Sebelius starstruck by Drew Brees

Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius does know who Drew Brees is. Really. But the secretary had a little oopsie moment Monday night when, at an event to promote the launch of a fitness initiative, she went to introduce Brees, co-chair to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition.

“I want to turn the mic over to somebody who is no stranger to any sports fan,” Sebelius said. “A wonderful quarterback for the St. Louis team.”

The secretary redeemed herself moments later by dropping a “Who dat,” indicating that she does indeed know that Brees plays for the New Orleans Saints. (Her staff later confirmed that it was a slip of the tongue.)

If Sebelius was a little flustered, it might have been the result of the “tough assignment” she’d had earlier.

“I had to have my picture taken and stand with my arm around Drew Brees,” she said. “I was hoping they would make it last just a little longer.”

We can’t blame the secretary for being tongue-tied around the tall MVP quarterback, who appears to have quite the effect on people. As Brees walked through the crowd at the Portrait Gallery, he crossed the path of one of the party’s waitstaff. The waiter froze, mouth hanging open over his tray of canapés, and dropped a loud expletive.
