Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, said Democrats are likely “rethinking” their decision to focus all their resources on Hillary Clinton’s candidacy in light of reports that the FBI has expanded an investigation into her conduct as secretary of state to include the Clinton Foundation.
“The reported expansion of the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s secret email server to include public corruption is a very troubling development,” Priebus said in a statement Monday.
“The favoritism toward donors to Clinton’s family foundation from her own State Department is undeniable and Democrats must now be rethinking whether it was smart to put all of their eggs in one basket,” he added.
The revelations came just days after the State Department released an email suggesting Clinton had asked one of her aides to strip the classified markings from a document and “send it nonsecure.”
The incident, which occurred in June 2011, was not the first time she had apparently asked staff to shift records from the government’s classified system onto her private network.
But it renewed a debate over whether Clinton knowingly mishandled sensitive information while serving as the nation’s chief diplomat, an allegation she has repeatedly denied.
FBI sources told Fox News they were expanding their probe to include potential “public corruption” charges in light of allegations that donors to the Clinton Foundation received special treatment from the State Department.
