The Congressional Black Caucus PAC panned Bernie Sanders in their endorsement of Hilary Clinton on Thursday, saying that unlike the Vermont senator Clinton has “earned their support over the years” as “someone who has always been proud to own the Democratic name.”
“Bernie Sanders hasn’t just been missing in action, he’s been on the wrong side of things,” CBC board member Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-La., said when asked about Sanders’ policy proposals
The crucial endorsement comes as Clinton and Sanders begin campaigning for the South Carolina primary, where Clinton is favored to win due to her popularity among black voters. The Vermont senator has attempted to make inroads with this group by speaking out on civil rights issues and, most recently, meeting with Al Sharpton.
When asked about why Clinton doesn’t attract as many young voters as Sanders, members of the CBC PAC said that they “were very excited that young people are engaged” but “once we get them excited and engaged then they can do their homework,” implying that Clinton is the better choice.
“You can’t just listen to what people are tell you,” Richmond added. “Because most of the time if it sounds good to be true it is. If you’re saying free college, free healthcare all you’re missing is a free house and a free car.”
