Texas Sen. Ted Cruz upset Donald Trump in Oklahoma.
While political forecasters expected Trump to win a plurality of Oklahoma’s delegates, Cruz predicted a win in the Sooner State and delivered. Cruz’s victory also dealt a blow to Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who hoped to do well in Oklahoma after earning endorsements of several current and former congressmen, and statewide officials.Oklahoma polling has been sparse on the Republican side this election cycle, but Trump’s lead never really appeared in doubt, as shown by RealClearPolitics’ average of Sooner State polling. Cruz, however, appeared to build a bond with the state’s conservative GOP base proved insurmountable for the reality-television-star-turned Republican. Cruz’s victory also appears reminiscent of former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum’s strong victory over front-runner Mitt Romney in 2012.
