Warner, Wolf introduce Route 15 heritage bill

Sen. John Warner, R-Va., and Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., have introduced companion bills in the House and Senate designating a 175-mile corridor along Route 15 a National Heritage Area.

The road stretches through Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. It encompasses Monticello, Montpelier, Manassas and Gettysburg, as well as 47 historic districts and many Revolutionary and Civil War battlefields.

National Heritage Areas are meant to encourage celebration and preservation of historic areas. There are 37 of these areas across the United States.

“In Virginia, we are lucky to have a region that is worthy of the recognition and celebration that a National Heritage Area designation affords,” Warner said when introducing the bill. “I intend to work with my colleagues in the Senate to give it the historic recognition that it deserves.”

“America’s history can literally be traced along this corridor,” Wolf added. “The Monroe Doctrine, the Marshall Plan and the Camp David Accords were penned right there in our backyard.”
