The ACLI Capital Challenge pulled out all the stops for Sen. Richard Lugar’s last go around. Before the 80-year-old senator, who has run in all 31 of the three-mile races, crossed the finish line Wednesday, event organizers put the tape back up so Lugar could feel the glory of a first-place finish.
“He looked good,” event director Jeff Darman said. “The crowd loved it.”
For his final race, Lugar came in around 45 minute mark. “He’s obviously in the slower element, but he’s 80 years old,” Darman said. Olympian Meb Keflezighi, holding Lugar’s hand high, crossed the line with him. The six-term Indiana senator was reportedly all smiles at the event.
Lugar was joined by nine Senate colleagues in the race, including Sen. John Thune, who posted the chamber’s best time.
Sen. Jim DeMint was scheduled to run but had to withdraw, citing back troubles.
