DeLay’s run on ‘Dancing With the Stars’ ends

The Hammer came down, but it was by his own accord.

Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay made his exit from ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” on Tuesday night after telling viewers he couldn’t practice, and he didn’t want to make dancing partner Cheryl Burke look like a fool. Going against the recommendations of both doctors and producers, DeLay and Burke managed to eke out the samba on Monday night’s performance show.

“Tom, I think you’re a hero. If I had a stress fracture with both feet, I wouldn’t be judging, let alone dancing,” head judge Len Goodman said. Praise didn’t equal points, however — DeLay and Burke scored just a 15 out of 30.

“Louis Veto told me that adrenaline would cover up the pain, and that’s what happened,” DeLay said after his performance. “Adrenaline flowing, no pain. We got through the dance.”

However, once that wore off, DeLay realized his days as a dancer were numbered, and then he bowed out. His departure comes at an unfortunate time — next week’s competition would have had the Texan dancing the Texas two-step.

“My friends, I hope you had as much fun watching us perform as we did performing. It was a great ride,” DeLay posted to Twitter on Wednesday morning. “Thanks for your support.”
