A biomedical company that used to procure aborted fetuses from some Planned Parenthood clinics paid $50 to $75 for each fetal body part, according to undercover investigators who released Tuesday an eighth video targeting the group.
Anti-abortion activist David Daleiden secretly filmed Cate Dyer, CEO of StemExpress, discussing its work with Planned Parenthood over a lunch meeting in May. In the footage, Dyer discusses difficulties in obtaining enough tissue to meet the demand of medical researchers and making sure it doesn’t become contaminated.
“What would make your lab happy?” Daleiden asks Dyer.
“Another 50 livers a week,” Dyer replies. “It’s volume for us.”
StemExpress had previously tried to get a court to bar Daleiden’s group, the Center for Medical Progress, from publicly releasing the video, but a judge ruled in favor of Daleiden on Friday.
In the edited footage, Dyer doesn’t discuss how much her company pays clinics for aborted fetuses — which has been a point of hot controversy among conservatives fired up by the series of videos targeting the women’s health and abortion provider. Abortion opponents are contending Planned Parenthood illegally profited from providing the fetal tissue, but the group says it was only compensated for overhead expenses, which would be legal.
According to Daleiden, former StemExpress employees have said the company paid $50 to $75 for each body part. StemExpress recently said it is no longer contracting with Planned Parenthood clinics.
Dyer is also shown discussing how many medical researchers — who buy tissue from her company — don’t want it to appear as recognizable body parts.
“It’s almost like they don’t want to know where they come from,” she said. “Where they’re like ‘we need limbs’ but no hands or feet need to be attached.”
