Republican Baker wins Mass. governor race

Republican Charlie Baker beat Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley on Tuesday in one of the closest gubernatorial races this year.

The Associated Press called the race for the Baker shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday, with the Republican ahead 48 percent to 47 percent with about 90 percent of the vote counted.

Coakley had comfortable poll leads through late summer and looked poised to redeem her shocking Senate loss in 2010 to Republican Scott Brown.

But Baker ran a strong campaign and eventually earned an influential endorsement from the Boston Globe.
