Brian Williams expected to lose news anchor role, but stay at NBC

NBC is set to announce Thursday that Brian Williams will remain at the network, but will not return to his position as the anchor of its “Nightly News” show.

The agreement is said to be tentative.

Williams was suspended four months ago by the network for exaggerating his role in a 2003 helicopter incident in Iraq. He admitted he embellished the account on his Feb. 4 newscast, and was subsequently suspended six days later for six months without pay.

An investigation by NBC into Williams, then the top nightly news anchor, found he had exaggerated or fabricated as many as 10 to 12 instances of his reporting, according to sources.

There is speculation Williams will move to MSNBC, the network’s cable news channel, to work in a breaking news role.

Williams, who replaced Tom Brokaw in 2004, was drawing close to 10 million viewers a night.

NBC could not be reached for comment; Robert Barnett, Williams’ lawyer, declined to comment.
