Popular natural food chain Whole Foods is recalling some potentially deadly cheese.
The chain is recalling all of its cut, wrapped and weighed Papillion organic Roquefort cheese because it has the potential to be contaminated with a deadly bacteria called Listeria moncytogenes.
The bacteria, found sometimes in contaminated foods, could cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people and people with weakened immune systems, according to a press release from the company Wednesday. It can also cause miscarriages or stillbirths in pregnant women.
So far no illnesses or infections have been reported.
The cheese is cut and packaged in a clear plastic wrap and sold with whole Foods Market labels, the company said.
Several other foods have been recalled due to listeria outbreaks this year. One of the biggest was Blue Bell Creamery recalling all of its ice cream products because of the bacteria.
Sabra had to recall approximately 30,000 cases of hummus because of Listeria back in April.
Listeria kills about 260 people a year and sickens about 1,600, according to figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The bacterium is easy to spread because it grows in cold places, which is different from other types of bacteria.
