Incoming Mayor-elect Adrian Fenty announced another round of key Cabinet positions Wednesday, surprising few by reappointing four people to their current posts while naming two former District employees to leadership positions.
Flanked by his appointees at the Frank D. Reeves Center on U Street in Northwest, Fenty named Brender L. Gregory, acting assistant general manager of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, to direct the often-troubled Office of Personnel. Gregory has spent 23 years working for District government and served as chief of staff for the District Department of Transportation from 2004-06.
Fenty also named Janice Quintana, who served as the operations manager for the Mayor’s Citywide Call Center, to lead the Unified Communications Center.
Gregory said she’d bring “fresh ideas and new approaches” to the personnel office, that will help her “hit the ground running,” Gregory said.
Fenty’s other reappointments include Devon Brown to lead the Department of Corrections; Deborah Gist to continue her leadership of the State Education Office, a position she has held since 2004; Vincent Schiraldi, Director of the Department of Youth and Rehabilitation Services; and William Howland, who will continue to direct the Department of Public Works.
Fenty was joined Wednesday by Dan Tangherlini, whom he has already named as his pick for city administrator, and Metropolitan Police Cmdr. Cathy Lanier, who he appointed to take over as police chief.
Another round of appointments is expected to be made next week. Fenty has already named his picks for deputy mayors, attorney general and chief of staff, among others.
As Fenty prepares to take office Jan. 2, about 145 people, including 35 directors and other appointed personnel, have been asked to resign.
