Gowdy cuts ad for Rubio, touts ‘strength’ on national security

Rep. Trey Gowdy, one of Sen. Marco Rubio’s top surrogates, cut an ad for the Rubio campaign that is set to hit television sets throughout South Carolina with only five days until the state’s primary.

In the ad titled “Fear,” Gowdy, who serves as chairman of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, argues that Rubio is the strongest in the GOP field on national security, and that he is also the candidate Democrats fear the most in a general election.

“I have spent my life fighting to enforce the rule of law and keep Americans safe. And no one is stronger for America’s security than Marco Rubio. Destroy [the Islamic State]. Protect our borders from all threats,” Gowdy said. “Marco Rubio will be a commander-in-chief who brings back American strength.”

“I’m Trey Gowdy, that’s why I support Marco Rubio and that’s why the Democrats fear Marco the most,” Gowdy says.

The Rubio campaign declined to say how much they spent on the ad in the state.

Gowdy is one of Rubio’s two top surrogates in the Palmetto State. Sen. Tim Scott is the other, and he has also hit the pavement for Rubio after endorsing him the night of the New Hampshire primary.

The Florida senator is currently battling for the No. 2 spot in the state with Sen. Ted Cruz. According to the latest RealClearPolitics average, Rubio sits third in South Carolina with 15.8 percent, slightly behind Cruz’s 17.8 percent. Donald Trump continues to lead in the state with 36.3 percent. Rubio is third behind Trump and Cruz in the Washington Examiner‘s presidential power rankings.
