An estimated 17.6 million people have gained insurance coverage under Obamacare since it became available, according to new figures released Tuesday.
The new figures are above the 16.4 million previously estimated in March by the administration.
The administration figures showed that 15.3 million gained health insurance since the start of the open enrollment period for Obamacare back in 2013. There were another 2.3 million people since 2010 who were able to stay on their parent’s insurance thanks to a provision in the law that raises the age for remaining on insurance to 26 years old.
In a speech outlining the use of the law so far, Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell said it has also helped decrease the uninsured rate for minorities.
“The uninsured rate among African-American adults has declined by more than 10 percentage points, compared to about 7.7 percent for the total population,” according to a transcript of Burwell’s remarks.
