CNN begins researching use of drones

CNN sounds like it’s getting ready to staff up on drones.

The cable network announced Monday that it’s partnering with the Federal Aviation Administration to “advance efforts to integrate Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) into newsgathering and reporting.” The FAA is a government agency that oversees and regulates U.S. aircrafts and air travel.

Unmanned aerial vehicles is another name for drones. Drones are often at the center of controversy for their ability to access private areas by air, often unseen. For example, strapping a camera to a drone might give a news outlet the ability to discreetly fly over someone’s home, perhaps a celebrity’s, and take live photos.

“The FAA will use data collected from this initiative to formulate a framework for various types of UAVs to be safely integrated into newsgathering operations,” the CNN release said.

CNN Senior Vice President David Vigilante said in the release, “Our aim is to get beyond hobby-grade equipment and to establish what options are available and workable to produce high quality video journalism using various types of UAVs and camera setups.”
