Kentucky Democratic candidate for Senate Alison Lundergan Grimes has sued the Kentucky Republican party over a direct mailer sent out to Eastern Kentucky voters.
The mailer, sent out by Sen. Mitch McConnell’s campaign, reads ‘Election Violation Notice’ on the front and has the appearance of an official Kentucky document. The letter informs the reader that Grimes’ campaign is spreading false information during the Kentucky Senate campaign.
Democrats have argued that the mailer, a direct attack on Grimes by the state’s GOP party, is nothing more than a voter suppression tactic. Grimes’ campaign manager Jonathan Hurst called McConnell’s actions ‘despicable.’
“Alison Lundergan Grimes spent hundreds of thousands of dollars smearing Mitch McConnell and his wife but she’s upset about a mailer that holds her accountable for her blatant falsehoods,” Kelsey Cooper, a spokesperson for the Kentucky GOP, said in a statement. “That’s exactly what we’ve come to expect from the Obama campaign machine that she’s attempted to introduce to Kentucky over the past two years.”
The mailer comes just days before Tuesday’s election and at the same time a new Bluegrass Poll shows the current Republican Minority Leader up five points over Grimes.
