Elle Editor-in-Chief Robbie Myers was in Washington for the magazine’s first ever White House Correspondents’ Association event, a private dinner held Thursday night for military families. With her expertise at our disposal, we had to get her take on how Washington’s women were faring in fashion these days.

“Like anything, once you drill down it’s always more rich and complex than what people see in the media,” Myers said. “I think that Mrs. Obama has electrified not just the country but the world, in terms of being really a modern woman and dressing in a modern way, but I do think some of the criticism of Washington, D.C., is earned.”
One of the examples she cited was last year’s correspondents’ dinner. “Last year when I watched it I sat there and I thought, ‘Where’s the fashion?’ ” she said. “I was just watching the entrances, but it was a sea of long black dresses, a sea of long black dresses.”
Her prescription for the problem: colorful accessories and shorter lengths. “We love the gown, but I think that a more modern way of dressing is sometimes going a little short for evening,” she said.
Myers also advised that Washington women not be intimidated by their Hollywood counterparts. “I think real style comes from a woman who knows herself and knows her body,” she said. “They look pretty, but it’s not the same.”
