Bill Maher supports Trump on taxes

HBO “Real Time” host Bill Maher, a favorite among liberals, is a supporter of Donald Trump’s position to increase taxes on the wealthiest Americans.

In a blog post on Thursday, Maher voiced his unlikely backing of the Republican presidential candidate’s tax views, though Maher has often mocked Trump on his show.

“Donald Trump supports raising his own taxes and getting rid of all kinds of loopholes for the super rich,” Maher wrote. “This is the great thing about being able to finance your own campaign: You don’t have to do what donors want; you can focus on what voters want. And even most Republicans want to eliminate loopholes and raise taxes on Wall Street billionaires.”

Trump has said in multiple recent interviews that he supports a higher tax on the wealthy, many of whom he describes as friends and says they “are paying very little tax.”

The anti-tax increase group Club for Growth has been hitting Trump with ads for his position on the issue.

“The big surprise of this campaign so far is that I thought the Republican I’d agree with most — meaning, best-case scenario, one that’s only half crazy — would be Rand Paul,” Maher wrote. “It turns out, on some things, it’s Trump.”
