Trump’s twist on Reagan: ‘I’m not paying for this mike’

Donald Trump on Wednesday night turned a defining moment about Ronald Reagan on its head.

In 1980, candidate Reagan made a splash in a fight with a newspaper editor who tried to turn off Reagan’s microphone during a Republican debate. The debate was paid for by Reagan’s campaign, and an angry Reagan told the editor, “I am paying for this microphone!”

More than three decades later, Trump, who is already comparing himself to Reagan, had his own microphone moment.

At a Florida rally, Trump started complaining about how his microphone kept popping.

“This mike is terrible. The stupid mike keeps popping,” he said to cheers. He then said he wouldn’t pay for such a lousy microphone.

“I believe in paying, but when somebody does a bad job, like this stupid mike, you shouldn’t pay the bastard,” he said.

“I guarantee I’m not paying for this mike.”
