Dems: GOP stuck in ‘Groundhog Day’ with another Obamacare repeal vote

House Democrats have seen this movie before. It’s played out dozens of times already.

On Thursday evening, the House voted and failed to pass legislation to gut Obamacare.

The vote to repeal President Obama’s signature healthcare law is the latest of dozens of attempts, although some votes have sought to completely repeal the law and others only looked to tweak it. The latest effort, a vote to override President Obama’s veto of a bill that would undo major parts of the Affordable Care Act required a two-thirds majority to override the veto.

Democratic lawmakers have long chided their Republican counterparts for their repeated failures in dismantling the healthcare law, which critics say has raised the cost of health insurance, forced people to lose their coverage and limited the choices they have in selecting plans.

The vote falls on Groundhog Day, an annual tradition in which people observe whether Puxsutawney Phil, a groundhog in Pennsylvania, sees its shadow after emerging from its burrow, which is believed to be a good indicator of whether spring will arrive early. The holiday inspired the movie, “Groundhog Day,” starring Bill Murray, in which he plays a TV weatherman who covers the Groundhog Day festivities and gets stuck in a loop reliving the same day over and over.

As the latest tongue-in-cheek jab at Republicans, a slew of Democrats have taken to Twitter using the #GroundhogDay hashtag coupled with pictures and gifs of a disgruntled Murray slamming his alarm clock and hijinks involving the weather-predicting rodent, Puxsutawney Phil.

Phil did not see his shadow this year, meaning spring is right around the corner.
