The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has launched an effort on television, radio and social media to dub the GOP the “Party of Trump.”
The “Party of Trump” website argues that in order to fight Trump, they must attack Republicans who pledge to stand with the likely GOP nominee, in order to ensure they aren’t elected to the Senate. The campaign says Trump’s supporters are “too dangerous” to be in government.
“Republican Senate candidates helped build the ‘Party of Trump’ by refusing to stand up to Donald Trump, and now these senators and candidates are tied to the front-runner’s toxic rhetoric and offensive comments,” DSCC National Press Secretary Lauren Passalacqua said.
“Republicans know that Trump threatens their already fragile Senate majority, but they are unwilling and unable to do anything to stop the car from driving off the cliff with Trump at the wheel,” she added.
A video accompanying the campaign shows images of Sens. John McCain (Ariz.), Kelly Ayotte (N.H.), Rob Portman (Ohio), Pat Toomey (Pa.), Mark Kirk (Ill.),Richard Burr (N.C.), Roy Blunt (Mo.), and Ron Johnson (Wis.), along with Reps. Joe Heck (Nev.), David Jolly (Fla.) and Ron DeSantis (Fla.), who are running for Senate seats. It also shows Senate candidates Robert Blaha (Colo.), and Todd Wilcox (Fla.) pledging to support the eventual Republican nominee. In the background, clips of Trump insulting reporters, cursing at crowds and talking about the size of his hands, and by implication his genitals, play in the background.
Although Trump has not been named the nominee, he currently leads the GOP with 460 delegates, followed by Ted Cruz at 369, Marco Rubio at 163 and John Kasich at 63.
