Blitzer gets team nickname

Wolf Blitzer’s unusual name is getting him attention again. It has progressed from a “Wayne’s World” Saturday Night Live parody in the 1990s to the nickname of a New York state soccer team in his hometown of Buffalo.

Looking for a new namesake, the National Premier Soccer League’s FC Buffalo initially included “Blitzers” in the poll as a quirky option for fans to decide on. But once Blitzer caught wind of the vote and Tweeted his numerous followers, the competition was shot. His name won 900 of the more than 2,300 votes cast, according to the team’s Web site.

“The term blitz comes from the German word for lightning, which is all over our logo and the official flag of our beloved home, Buffalo,” staff members wrote in a blog post on the team’s Web site.

Blitzer did not respond to an e-mailed request for comment.
