Perry’s 1986 PSA

A little dirt has come out on Texas Gov. Rick Perry — though in this case, it seems purely accidental. Politico has unearthed a story from 1986, when then-Democratic Texas Rep. Rick Perry sent an anti-drug video to 26 high schools only to discover later that there was a nude sex scene attached to the end of the 45-minute video, which surprised freshmen students at Baird High School when it was discovered.

“All of them were bug-eyed and looking up there. There were these two people in bed,” said Tommy Varner, an assistant coach at the high school who saw the 30-second attraction after the anti-drug program ended. “I turned the machine off and tried to go on … It wasn’t easy with 30 kids chuckling and giggling.”

Perry’s aides said he’d seen the tape, which featured a noted toxicologist talking about his experiences with drug abusers and rehabilitation. He’d been so impressed with the program that he ordered 30 copies made by House Technical Services. It was later found that the director of Technical Services had accidentally used his copy of “1984” to record the master-tape for Perry’s copies of the drug video – copying the steamy scene by accident onto Perry’s tapes. Perry immediately recalled the tapes, apologizing for the “embarrassing” scene and saying his attempt at public service “backfired” because of “this five-second skin shot.”
