In his new book “While America Sleeps,” former senator Russ Feingold presents a look at the fear that gripped Washington after Sept. 11. He also describes the confusion that gripped certain members of the Senate during the Clinton impeachment trial in 1999. According to Feingold, Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., approached Feingold and the late Paul Wellstone for clarification: “I am a little embarrassed to ask you guys this,” Levin reportedly said, “but what’s a thong?” There are no stupid questions, only awkward answers.
