Axelrod hopes to get back in B-ball shape

Be like Mike?

President Barack Obama is a skilled basketball player and has been surrounding himself with fellow ballers (Education Secretary Arne Duncan, personal aide Reggie Love and brother-in-law Craig Robinson are all hoops afficiandos). But Obama adviser David Axelrod doesn’t think he’s quite ready to hit the court with the president, even though he says that “basketball is my sport.”

“I need to work on my waistline first,” Axelrod told Yeas & Nays recently, referring to some girth he’s gained over the course of a long presidential campaign. “It could be a while before I jump back in. But I love basketball.”

But just because Axelrod isn’t ready to shoot hoops doesn’t mean that some other big-name players won’t be at the White House anytime soon … like former Chicago Bulls superstar Michael Jordan.

“The president has played hoops with Jordan before,” said Axelrod. And what about a rematch? Echoing a statement that has defined the rise of Obama, Axelrod told us, “Anything is possible.”
