Wall Street Journal: ‘Hard to deny’ Trump nomination

The Wall Street Journal’s conservative editorial board has been highly critical of Donald Trump’s candidacy, but the paper admitted Wednesday night it would be difficult to deny him the party’s nomination for president, even if he falls short of the required delegates needed to lock it down before the convention in July.

“We continue to believe the delegates in Cleveland should nominate the most electable candidate,” said the Journal. “But realistically, Mr. Trump will be hard to deny if he rolls through the remaining primaries — even if he is short of 1,237.”

After Trump won big in his home state of New York, the Associated Press declared that the developer was the only one left in the race who can mathematically win enough delegates before the convention. The other two candidates, Ted Cruz and John Kasich, would only be able to win by starving Trump of the required delegates in advance, and even then, Trump would still have the most by July.

“John Kasich or Ted Cruz are going to have to do more than steal delegates to stop him now. They have to coordinate and win some states,” said the Journal.

In upcoming primary states, including Connecticut, Rhode Island and Maryland, Trump is leading and expected to win, further boosting his delegate count.
