Democrats miss out on Bill Clinton’s golden fundraising touch after birth of his first grandchild

Chelsea Clinton’s new baby will be costly for Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., who is locked in a tight re-election race.

The reason: President Bill Clinton, the Democratic Party’s rock star of fundraising, cancelled an appearance at a fundraising event Saturday. Clinton had been slated to raise campaign cash for Udall and Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, a fellow Democrat who recently fell behind in his bid for re-election.

Chelsea Clinton gave birth to her first child — Bill and Hillary’s first grandchild — Friday. The girl was named Charlotte.

Udall is battling Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., who is slightly ahead 43.8 to 43 percent in the latest RealClearPolitics polling average. The Republican had been trailing Udall until the latest average was posted Friday.

The RCP average also shows Hickenlooper trailing Republican Bob Beauprez, a former Congressman, by just under two percentage points after leading until earlier this month.
