Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown is a Red Sox fan — at least that’s what you’d believe if you listened to his recent radio ad extolling the virtues of Fenway Park. But you wouldn’t necessarily know it to look at his campaign donors – one of whom is Yankees president Randy Levine, who donated the maximum-allowed amount of $2,500 to the Brown’s campaign against Democrat Elizabeth Warren, according to a report from the Boston Herald.
Of course it’s funny to think that Levine helped pay for Brown’s Fenway ad — which has generated its own controversy, since Brown angered Sox fans by trying to move the stadium to Foxboro in 2001 – but Levine hasn’t let team loyalties get in the way of playing politics. As a former aide to New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, he raised between $100,000 and $250,000 as a “bundler” for John McCain in 2008. He also donated $2,500 to Romney’s campaign, and last year he gave $5,000 to Romney’s Free and Strong America PAC. And taking money from the leader of baseball’s Evil Empire doesn’t seem to bother the Brown camp either. “We’re happy to accept Randy Levine’s donation,” said Brown campaign spokesman Colin Reed. “The way Scott Brown looks at it is, this is their way of paying us back for Babe Ruth.”
