Cummings ‘very comfortable’ with charges against Baltimore police

Rep. Elijah Cummings, a Democrat who represents Baltimore, said he is “very comfortable” with the charges filed against six city police officers in the death of Freddie Gray.

“[Marilyn Mosby] is a veteran prosecutor,” Cummings said on ABC’s “This Week.” “She’s a young lady has spent a lot of time addressing these kinds of issues. And her integrity is impeccable without a doubt. And I think she made the very best decision that she could. She looked at all the evidence and did what she had to do.”

Cummings, who lives in one of the neighborhoods central to recent civil unrest and rioting, said Baltimore’s problems stem from neglect. He called for new investments in the city and an examination of how the police department acts in the community.

“We’ve got to invest in our cities and our children,” Cummings said. “A lot of young people feel that they have been disconnected. And we have to have what I call an inclusion revolution and address issues such as joblessness and training for young people.”

Cummings called “an up and down look” at the police force in Baltimore and the involvement of government to repair the city.

“It’s going to take all of us,” Cummings said. “It’s going to take everybody from the president, the governor, all of our state legislators and certainly we’re going to have the business community and foundations.”
