Gov. John Kasich hopes his next move will be from the Midwest to the Northeast.
According to paperwork filed with the Internal Revenue Service, the Ohio governor started a 527 organization called “New Day for America” Monday, signaling he will explore a 2016 White House bid.
“We’re going to start getting around the country more, meeting and talking with more people,” the two-term Republican governor and former 2000 presidential candidate said in a video posted online, before discussing a balanced budget, as well as tax-code and healthcare reforms.
His 527 group will be tax-exempt and able to accept unlimited donations while he mulls an official run. However, should he launch a campaign, he loses that ability.
Kasich has made stops in both New Hampshire and Ohio within the past few weeks, before NBC News Sunday that he was becoming “more and more serious” about presidential campaign.
Should he officially decide to run, Kasich has a considerable amount of ground to make up. With 1.3 points, he is in last place among a 12-person deep race for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, according to a RealClearPolitics average of polls. The leader, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has nearly 17 points.
