“This is an ominous development for the Clinton campaign and for Democrats as a whole,” Sen. Ted Cruz said on Fox News moments after the news broke that the FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private server to handle sensitive government secrets while secretary of state is intensifying.
“This suggests that the investigation is moving to a whole other level,” Cruz warned.
The Justice Department announced late Wednesday it would grant immunity to Bryan Pagliano, the former State Department staffer who installed Hillary Clinton’s private email server during her time at the State Department.
Cruz, a constitutional lawyer, said the Justice Department’s grant of immunity is a sign the administration is determined to get more details about Pagliano’s involvement and about what Clinton and her staffers instructed him to do.
“That suggests that the legal jeopardy is just getting greater and greater,” Cruz added.
Pagliano, a 2008 presidential campaign staffer to Clinton, had pleaded the Fifth Amendment last month in a congressional hearing about his involvement.
Cruz reiterated comments made by current and former FBI officials, telling Megyn Kelly the government is moving forward to wrap up the investigation in coming months, at the same time as Clinton inches closer to the Democratic convention in July.
Cruz, a first-term Texas senator, is ranked second in the Washington Examiner’s presidential power rankings.
