Schilling makes his pitch for ALS research

I didn’t have anything else to do,” said Curt Schilling as the reason he first got into helping out The ALS Association 19 years ago when he was a young pitcher. Since then, he’s become so passionate about the cause, he and his wife have donated or raised $10 million to the cause of Lou Gehrig’s disease, he named his first son Gehrig and he famously wrote “KO ALS” on his shoe during the 2004 postseason when he knew a lot of cameras would be focused there.

Tuesday morning, the association presented the two-time world champion hurler and Hall of Fame hopeful with its first Hall of Fame Award.

After walking in about an hour into the breakfast, Schilling wondered aloud why he was late, now that he’s retired. Riffing on how quickly his wife got ready, he said, “My wife has never been sexier to me than she is now. For 19 years, I thought it took four and a half hours to get ready. She has been lying to me.”

The event kicked off the association’s Annual ALS Advocacy Day, during which Schilling was expected to call on Sens. John Kyl, R-Ariz., Judd Gregg, R-N.H., and Olympia Snowe, R-Maine.
