Most American voters favor Supreme Court decision allowing same-sex marriage

By a 56 percent to 38 percent margin, American voters now support a Supreme Court decision allowing same-sex marriage.

The backing by American voters comes as the court is poised to make a decision that could grant same-sex couples the constitutional right to marry nationwide. Overall, voters support same-sex marriage 56 percent to 36 percent in general, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll.

There is a divide down party lines when it comes to backing a Supreme Court decision in favor of same-sex marriage: Democrats are in favor, 70 percent to 24 percent, while Republicans are opposed 62-34 percent.

Independent voters favor same-sex marriage 61-34 percent, men 55-41 percent and women 57-35 percent, the poll also found.

The telephone-based poll of roughly 1,700 registered voters nationwide was conducted May 19-26 with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.4 percentage points.
