An ad released Friday by Ben Carson’s campaign tells the story of a woman who credits the former pediatric neurosurgeon with saving her pregnancy.
The 60 second ad, titled “Isabella,” features Christy Wood, who got pregnant at the age of 40, and five months in found out her daughter had Dandy-Walker Syndrom, a congenital brain malformation that results in physical and mental disabilities.
After speaking with a handful of neurologists who gave her varying opinions on whether to keep the baby, Wood called Ben Carson.
Text in the ad explains that Carson provided a review free of charge, as Wood says her insurance would not have covered it.
“Once I talked to him, I felt much more confident that my daughter would be okay,” Wood said. “He was telling me that you have to have faith. God gives you what you can handle.”
“With his guidance I was able to make the right decision to continue with the pregnancy,” Wood added, as the ad plays a series of videos of her daughter walking around and playing.
A post accompanying the video on Ben Carson’s official Facebook page touts his “sterling 30 year career as one of the world’s leading pediatric neurosurgeons.”
“Dr. Ben Carson relishes the impact he has had on the lives and future generations of so many,” the post reads. “Sometimes, Dr. Carson didn’t even need to don his surgical gown to inspire life.”
Carson was the director of pediatric neurosurgury at Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1984 to 2013. He currently ranks third in the Washington Examiner’s latest power rankings.
