Speakeasy: Kal Penn explains Obama’s ‘Harold & Kumar’ ad

We were just hungry because it was the morning.”

– Actor and former White House staffer Kal Penn’s explanation for why he and John Cho, the stars of the “Harold & Kumar” stoner movie series, are gobbling up food in the new Obama advertisement for Penn’s Democratic National Convention hosting gig. (He’ll be hosting coverage on BarackObama.com). The ad was shown Wednesday afternoon at the National Journal and Atlantic’s Conversations with the Next Generation event with NBC’s Chuck Todd pointing out, “There’s no smoke there” in the video. Penn noted at the event how he was worried he would be a distraction from the conversation when he started volunteering for the Obama campaign back in 2007. “What happens when we do events like this and out of 50 questions, I’m going to get 50 stoner movie questions,” Penn said. Luckily, that didn’t happen. “Literally, out of 50 questions I’ll have one or two about a movie.”
