Hillary Clinton made a cameo on the set of ABC TV show Scandal in February and the reason for the visit became evident during the network’s primetime shows Thursday night. The Democratic presidential candidate’s campaign released a video endorsement by a number of leading ladies on the network’s dramas just as the Republican presidential debate was simultaneously taking place on CNN.
Shonda Rhimes, Viola Davis, Kerry Washington and Ellen Pompeo volunteered their support for the former first lady’s presidential bid. The Clinton team joined forces with the four women and video director Tony Goldwyn, the leading man in Scandal, to produce it.
The women tag-teamed the endorsement, each saying a line of the script for a collective feel.
“Every day I wake up and play a brilliant, complex, overqualified, get-it-done woman who obsessively fights for justice, who cares, who gives a voice to the voiceless, who gets knocked down and always gets back up. I make television filled with the kind of characters I imagine we all can be: strong, but flawed; human, but extraordinary. Our characters are on television, but the real world has Hillary Clinton … a bonafide, rolls up her sleeves, fights for what’s right, in it for you, won’t back down, champion for all of us. That’s why I’m with Hillary … join us.”
Rhimes created Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy, and is the executive producer for How to Get Away With Murder, all three of which are part of ABC’s Thursday primetime lineup. Washington stars in Scandal, Davis in How to Get Away With Murder, and Pompeo leads in Grey’s Anatomy.
