Pelosi dances around question of more Dem debates

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi danced around the question of more Democratic debates in an interview less than an hour before the start of the fourth debate.

“I have been one who has advocated for more debates,” Pelosi told NBC’s Chuck Todd at the debate venue in Charleston, S.C. “I think that they have done justice to our issues and to our candidates,” Pelosi replied.

Republican debates have drawn more coverage and viewers than the Democratic debates. The Republican candidates are scheduled to participate in 12 debates versus six that Democrats plan.

Back in September, Pelosi said she supported the idea of more than the six debates scheduled by the Democratic National Committee.

“Hillary does well, I think they all do well on them, and we should have more debates,” Pelosi told the Los Angeles Times.

Both Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley have pressed for more debates. They trail Hillary Clinton in national polls, and critics of the number of Democratic debates have expressed concerned that the DNC is reducing the visibility of the Democratic campaign to pave the way to victory for the former secretary of state.

“So, let them debate more, right?”, Todd asked, pressing Pelosi to elaborate.

“Well, there are more debates to come,” Pelosi said.

The fourth Democratic debate starts at 9 p.m. EST.
