Walker hints at 2016 endorsement: ‘Cruz is the only one who’s got a chance’

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker said he may make an endorsement in the 2016 presidential race soon and hinted that he may favor Ted Cruz.

The governor told 620 WTMJ in Wisconsin that he would make a decision about whether to make any endorsement in the coming week.

“I think it’s fair to say my views, my beliefs, my strategy overall would probably be more aligned with either Sen. Ted Cruz or Gov. John Kasich,” Walker said.

“If you’re someone who is uneasy with the front-runner, right now there’s really only one candidate I think if you’re just looking at the numbers objectively, Ted Cruz,” he added. “Sen. Cruz is the only one who’s got a chance other than Donald Trump to win the nomination. Statistically, my friend Gov. Kasich cannot.”

The governor said he would make an endorsement if he thinks it would have a positive outcome on his state’s primary and noted that he would not wait until the last moment as Gov. Gary Herbert did when endorsing Cruz in Utah.

Walker also said he welcomes an open convention this summer. He said he would have a hard time imagining that the front-runner could enter the convention without the delegates needed to secure the nomination and leave as the nominee of the Republican Party.

He did not say who he thought would win in such a contested situation, and noted that most of his predictions in the 2016 election cycle have been “wildly off the mark.”
