The new funds are part of a larger Capitol security spending plan that includes nearly $2 billion to increase security at the Capitol building in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 attack on the building, including $708 million for Capitol Police.
HOUSE REPUBLICANS SEEK BIDEN ADMINISTRATION’S VOTER REGISTRATION PLANS
“More than a year after the January 6 attack on the Capitol, this bill bolsters investments to further secure the Capitol complex and support the Capitol Police,” House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) said in a press release. “It helps change the complex and culture to protect the United States Capitol and the people who work there.”
The new budget for the Capitol Police includes the hiring of up to 2,126 officers and 567 civilian members. It will also contribute to training on de-escalation and racial bias.
The budget’s new finances for the police counter the rhetoric for defunding the police that gained traction after the death of George Floyd in May of 2020. Floyd, a black man, died after a white police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

Other key sections in the budget include $24.3 million for paid interns, $790.3 million for the Government Accountability Office, and necessary finances to support staffing for members of the House of Representatives.
The bill, which does not include funding for the Senate, will now head to the full committee for approval.
