Spanberger tosses affordability out the window along with her popularity

Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) ran one of the most fraudulently “centrist” campaigns in the country in recent years. It got her the victory she wanted, and now both she and Virginians are paying the price for her duplicity.

Just two months into her term as governor, a Washington Post–Schar School poll puts Spanberger’s approval at 47%, with a disapproval rating of 46%. For some context on how bad those numbers are after just two months on the job, Spanberger won her 2025 election 57%-42%. She won 59% of independents, but her independent approval is now just underwater at 45%-46%.

VIRGINIA BUSINESS LEADERS URGE SPANBERGER TO STEER AWAY FROM NEW TAXES IN AFFORDABILITY PUSH

Former Gov. Glenn Youngkin had better numbers when he left office, finishing his four-year term with 50% approval to 46% disapproval. That means that Spanberger has managed to be more polarizing in two months on the job than a Republican who held the job for four years in a blue state. It is an impressive “accomplishment,” and it leaves Spanberger trailing the average Virginia governor going back to the 1990s at this point in their term by 13 points.

This is because Spanberger pulled off a very simple ruse, with the help of President Donald Trump. Spanberger presented herself as some centrist who was particularly focused on affordability, a campaign plan that worked after Trump’s tariffs continued to strain people’s pocketbooks after years of Bidenflation.

The problem is that the Democratic Party agenda sacrifices affordability through higher taxes, burdensome regulations, and out-of-control spending. Spanberger’s campaign was always a Trojan horse, and that has become clear in the last two months, as she has jettisoned affordability in pursuit of her real goals. Two of her first acts upon taking office were tying Virginia to more climate regulations, which will lead to energy costs increasing, and blocking deportations of violent illegal immigrant criminals, showing how she and the Democratic Party prioritize illegal immigrants over Virginians.

Spanberger is now in a political fight over congressional redistricting, as she and Virginia Democrats fight to rig the state’s political map in their favor. Spanberger very blatantly lied to voters during the campaign about how she would not pursue this gerrymandered redistricting, only to turn around and try to create a 10-1 congressional map in the Democratic Party’s favor. That two-faced act is part of why Spanberger’s reputation is already tanking.

Grocery prices? Those take a back seat to empowering House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). Energy prices? Sorry, climate regulations come first. Anything that makes life easier for Virginians? Spanberger will get to that right after she prevents Immigration and Customs Enforcement from deporting a murderous illegal immigrant.

It was obvious how a Spanberger administration would play out, and Virginians are now paying the price. Spanberger got what she wanted, but it came at a political cost for her and a financial cost for the Virginians she is imposing her left-wing policies on just two months into her four-year term.
