ESPN host Stephen A. Smith is very angry that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady skipped out on President Obama’s ceremony to honor the Super Bowl champion team at the White House Thursday.
According to reports, Brady was unable to attend the event because of a family commitment. For Smith, that excuse was insufficient and troubling.
“Where the hell was Tom Brady?” Smith exclaimed during Friday’s episode of his radio show. “When you won the Super Bowl in 2001 and George W. Bush was president, you were there. When you won back-to-back Super Bowl titles in 2003 and 2004 with George W. Bush still president, you were there. How come you wasn’t there yesterday when President Barack Obama was there?”
The ESPN commentator — who made headlines last month for urging black Americans to vote GOP for one election — fumed, wondering whether or not Brady’s unspoken political views might have fueled the snub.
“I mean, is he a Republican and don’t want anybody to know?” Smith said. “Even if he is, so what? The president has had Republicans at the White House before. Why is it that you’ve got to show up for George W. Bush … three times but you’ve got a family commitment — not an emergency — a commitment.”
Interestingly enough, Brady said in an interview last year that what frustrates him about politics is the constant fighting generated by the polarization of both parties.
Smith went on to knock Brady for not showing “respect” for Obama, wondering whether or not the quarterback would have shown up if someone else — Democrat or Republican — was occupying the White House.
“Why do I feel like if George W. Bush or Bill Clinton or somebody was there, why do I feel like Tom Brady would have been there then?” he exclaimed.
