In response to a campaign by the Left to paint laws requiring Americans to present photo identification at the ballot box as racist, two prominent black conservative women are speaking out in favor of Voter ID laws.
Dineen Borelli, author of Blacklash: How Obama and the Left are Driving Americans to the Government Plantation and Mia Love, a Republican candidate for Congress, became the latest black conservatives to vocally support Voter ID laws last week, saying that Attorney General Eric Holder, who is also black, is off base in his claims that the laws discriminate against minorities.
At a gathering of conservatives of in Dallas, Texas on Thursday evening, Borelli, who is also the Outreach Director for FreedomWorks, told the audience of more than 15,000 people that Holder was a “coward” for comparing Republican led efforts to curb voter fraud to poll taxes at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) convention earlier this month.
“And speaking of Eric Holder,” Borelli said to boos from the audience, “playing the race card with Voter ID laws – a disgrace. He is a disgrace.”
Progressive organizations like the Brennan Center for Justice and the NAACP are waging an election year fight against state laws requiring voters to show a valid, government issued photo ID at the ballot box in order to vote. Conservatives have been slow to push back against the erroneous claims but are finally gaining their footing on the issue as more incidences of voter fraud come to light.
“I would think that Eric Holder would change his mind after somebody just walked in [to vote] and said that they were Eric Holder,” Mia Love told Red Alert Politics in a phone interview, saying that Voter ID laws do not violate Americans’ constitutional rights.
Love, who is the GOP nominee for Congress in the newly created fourth Congressional District in Utah, was referencing the Project Veritas undercover investigation in which one of the groups’ journalists obtained Eric Holder’s ballot during the city’s primary last spring. The operative would have been able to vote as Holder – without presenting proof of his identity – had he wanted to. (Which he did not want to do – committing voter fraud is a crime.)
“The simple fact of the matter is it’s nearly impossible to function in a today’s society without ID,” Love said, pointing out that you can’t get on a plane or into certain government buildings without an ID.
Utah, where Love is running for office, is especially at risk for voter fraud. Because the state allows illegal immigrants to obtain drivers licenses even a Voter ID law requiring would be voters to show a government issued photo ID wouldn’t stop illegal immigrants from scamming the system.
Love said that if elected, she would support federal legislation requiring Americans to provide a photo ID in order to vote.
“You have to understand that so many people have fought and died of for years to gain and preserve our right to vote,” she said. “And as far as I’m concerned, it’s not too much to ask for people to prove their identity.”
At a breakfast for conservative bloggers in Washington, D.C. on July 12 Love told Red Alert Politics she wasn’t worried that Voter ID laws would unfairly affect minorities.
“If you’re doing the right thing, what are you afraid of Voter ID for?” she wondered.
Borelli and Love join former GOP Presidential Candidate Herman Cain and former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell in fighting back against Holder and the Left’s ridiculous claims that Republicans are trying to suppress the minority vote.
