Jon Stewart cuts the comedy for segment on Garner

“The Daily Show” filmed Wednesday right after the Staten Island grand jury decided not to indict NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo in the chokehold death of Eric Garner and host Jon Stewart cut the comedy to discuss the news.

“I don’t know,”  Stewart said.  “I honestly don’t know what to say. If comedy is tragedy plus time, I need more f–king time — but I would really settle for less f–king tragedy.”

Stewart has been an outspoken critic of the grand jury decision in Ferguson and a supporter of the protesters in the Michael Brown case, but said the Garner case was so much more clear cut.

“I think what is so utterly depressing is that none of the ambiguities that exist in the Ferguson case exist in the Staten Island case. And yet the outcome is exactly the same. There is no crime, no trial. All harm, no foul,” he said.

“A couple of days ago the White House proposed more cameras on cop vests as a solution to this type of violence. I assume that the solution, if implemented, would look something like the Eric Garner case. Maybe, to look at the bright side, we’re about to save ourselves a s–t ton of money on cameras for cop vests, but d–m.”
