[WATCH] Students don’t know John Kerry or Vladimir Putin, but can describe twerking

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Secretary of State John Kerry have been staples of the news lately, but that doesn’t mean college students near the nation’s Capitol can properly identify them, as the Media Research Center discovered. But ask them about twerking, and it’s a whole different ball game.

The Media Research Center’s Dan Joseph headed to George Mason University to see just how well-versed students were in world leaders. Unfortunately, as he discovered, many couldn’t identity current Secretary of State John Kerry, but perfectly described how to twerk — the dance move made infamous by Miley Cyrus during the “MTV Video Music Awards” last month.

“Who is the current Secretary of State?” Joseph asked one co-ed clad in a George Mason sweatshirt.

“Oh no … isn’t he like white haired?” she replied. “Gosh, what’s his name?”

When asked what twerking is, though, all of the students Joseph interviewed described the act.

“Twerking is bending your body. Usually your hands are on the floor or on your knees,” one student told Joseph. “You are in an up-and-down motion, kind of bouncing like.”

And some students even had their own experiences with twerking, bashfully telling Joseph they had performed the dance themselves. It is, as one student said, a talent, after all.

“I think it’s more of a talent here,” she said. “It’s praised if you can twerk.”

Joseph also brought students into the realm of international politics, asking them to identify Russian President Vladimir Putin, though very few could oblige.
