First Lady Michelle Obama: WH garden is “semi-open to the public”

Don’t cry, schoolchildren of America. You might not be able to tour the White House, but you can still see the garden — from beyond the fence.

Speaking at her book signing on Tuesday in Washington, D.C., the First Lady told those in attendance she had written her book, “American Grown,” because Americans only have limited ‘access’ to the White House Kitchen Garden.

“My goal in this book is to share the story of the creation of the garden, because while it is semi-open to the public — because if you visit the White House along the South Lawn, you can see the garden from outside of the White House,” she said, according to White House transcripts.

The First Lady also said millions of people visit Washington and hear about the garden, but don’t get to see it.

“So we wanted to use this as an opportunity to tell people about how we started it and how we thought about it, who all is involved, what kind of role Bo plays — he’s a very significant part of the book,” she added.

But local schoolchildren used to be able to tour the gardens, a practice that was discontinued post-sequester. Tours of the White House itself were also cancelled due to the sequester, according to the Press Secretary Jay Carney.

Back in April, the White House did allow members of the public to view the gardens over the course of two days.

This was Mrs. Obama’s second book signing, both for the release of “American Grown,” a book about the White House Kitchen Garden.
