Congress is ready for a summer recess, but comedian Jon Stewart thinks they haven’t earned their five-week break just yet.
On “The Daily Show” Thursday night, Stewart turned on Congress, ridiculing them for heading into their August recess without having passed necessary legislation, but finding the time to pass a bill to sue the president.
“Stop. Don’t be so hard on yourselves,” said Stewart, “when you guys suck, it isn’t failure. It’s just you living up to our extremely low expectations of you. Congress is the ‘Sharknado 2’ of government,” he concluded, referencing the recent campy sci-fi sequel.
Just because sequels make bad movies doesn’t mean that Stewart is letting Congress off the hook, though. He presented a list of issues needing legislative attention and criticized the decision of Congressional Republicans to proceed with a resolution suing the president rather than tackling immigration or student loans.
“Look, we talked about this Congress, you have to pass the laws on your plate, all of them, before you get dessert, which in this case is you suing the president,” he joked.
Pouring himself a cup of coffee, Stewart made light of Congressional Republicans who called the administration’s policies tyranny.
“We all know throughout history the only way to depose a tyrant is via a civil lawsuit,” said Stewart. “I think I remember Ceasar’s famous last words, ‘Et sue, Brute?'”
It was certainly a rough night for Congress on “The Daily Show.”
