Rep. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) isn’t tolerating some anonymous criticism coming from the Obama administration.
During a House Foreign Affairs joint subcommittee hearing Wednesday, Cotton called out Obama officials who have been quoted taking jabs at Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s platoon mates.
“Show yourself, speak in your own name, have the courage of your convictions. And if you don’t, shut up and stand back and thank these men for their service,” Cotton said.
The anonymous officials have gone after Bergdahl’s platoon for its lack of discipline. One anonymous source even told The New York Times that the platoon was “raggedy,” part of a story that attacked Bergdahl’s unit for its known “troubles.”
Cotton also expressed that he’s not buying the president’s “leave no man behind” principle.
“I find it offensive and insulting that this administration, up to and including the president, would cite the principle of leaving no man behind to justify this action,” said Cotton. “When we made those promises to each other, we didn’t promise that we would exchange five stone-cold Taliban killers for each other, nor would any soldier want that to happen.”
Cotton is a veteran himself. He served tours of duty in both Afghanistan and Iraq, leaving private practice as lawyer behind to serve following September 11th.
The freshman Arkansas congressman has seen his profile rise recently. He is running to unseat current Sen. Mark Pryor, a Democrat, in the November election.
