Okay, so you don’t have to shotgun it, but at least give the can some attention this weekend.
As Time magazine reports, the beer can was first sold on January 24, 1935, which makes Saturday the alcohol vessel’s 80th birthday.
The company American Can Co. developed the first can, a project it had been working to perfect since 1909. The new beer vessel came just two years after individuals toasted to the end of Prohibition in 1933.
It might surprise you that breweries weren’t sold on the idea of selling the beverage in a can. In fact, American Can had to install its can-crafting equipment at Gottfried Krueger Brewery for free.
Alas, canned servings of Krueger’s Finest Beer and Krueger’s Cream Ale were sold in Richmond, Va., and drinkers bought them right up.
Today, canned beer is the choice of many drinkers, from the dudes in your college dorm to your grandpa sitting on the couch watching baseball.
Data from 2012 showed that cans comprised 53.2 percent of the beer market, while bottles made up 36.5 percent, according to Market Watch.
So, go buy a 12-pack of Bud Light or Coors or whatever your palate desires, and make sure to tell President Obama to get that in a can:
