Marc Elias, the top campaign lawyer for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, is suing the state of Wisconsin on the grounds that Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI) and the Republican legislature are guilty of voter suppression.

According to The New York Times, this is Elias’ second lawsuit against a Republican-controlled state, with the other being Ohio.

Both Ohio and Wisconsin have voter ID laws, the latter state demands a photo ID while the former does not.

“This lawsuit concerns the most fundamental of rights guaranteed citizens in our representative democracy — the right to vote,” Elias wrote in his complaint.

He goes on to state that Republicans have negatively affected voting rights for minorities and young people by curtailing early voting, requiring identification to vote, eliminating straight-ticket voting, and other election law changes.

“That right has been under attack in Wisconsin since Republicans gained control of the governor’s office and both houses of the State Legislature in the 2010 election,” he declared.

But, as the New York Times pointed out, it has led some to wonder if this is not just a thinly veiled attack from the Clinton camp on Walker, a likely presidential candidate who has been dominating polls on the Republican side.

Clinton’s aides told the Times that the suit was not filed for the campaign, but they said they fully supported it.

“We are aware of it and strongly support its goal of ensuring the right to vote is not unduly burdened,” Brian Fallon, a spokesman for Clinton, said in a statement.
