The Obama campaign is out with an ad hitting Mitt Romney for saying something he never said – that he would cut college scholarships.
The accusation is part of a new ad titled “Mitt Romney: Extreme Makeover Campaign Edition.”
The voiceover asks, “Could a new support beam cover the weight of Romney’s plans to cut college scholarships to millions of students?” before launching into a badly distorted clip of Mitt Romney telling students to “shop around.”
The badly distorted clip stems from a campaign stop Romney made last March in Youngstown, Ohio during the primaries.
He suggested then that it was not the government’s responsibility to pay for everyone’s college educations and told a college student who had asked him about his position to look around for a school he could afford.
“Don’t take on too much debt, and don’t expect the government to forgive the debt that you take out,” Romney said during the same speech. “Recognize that you’re gonna have to pay it back.
“I want to make sure that every kid in this country that wants to go to college gets the chance to go to college.”
He also suggested joining the National Guard or the active-duty military to get their four-year degrees paid for by the government.
